SOME TOURISTIC INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF INTERES

San Pedro de Atacama  is a Chilean town and commune. It grew, over centuries, around an oasis in the Puna de Atacama, an arid high plateau. Its first inhabitants developed basketworks and ceramic pottery crafts that can be now be appreciated by tourists in several souvenir shops as typical products.

  • San Pedro Church: It was constructed during the Spanish colonial period, and is reportedly the second oldest church in Chile. It is made with adobe material and its appearance is characterized as simple and elegant.
  • Death Valley: Close to San Pedro de Atacama is the Valle de la Muerte, or Death Valley. This sprawling environment, which is just north of the Moon Valley, has rugged and weathered formations, and some huge sand dunes.
  • Pukara de Quitor: This ancient fortress is located 3 kilometers north of San Pedro de Atacama. It is an archaeological site dating back to pre-Columbian times, carved away in the existing hillside.
  • Valle de la Luna: Just outside of San Pedro de Atacama is the Valle de la Luna, or Moon Valley in English. It is perhaps the most visited, and widely known of the places in the Atacama Desert. The viewpoints just outside of town are also a great spot to watch sunset. If you don’t have your own car or don’t want to rent a bicycle, you can join a tour.
  • Laguna Cejar/Laguna Baltinache: The lagoons and ponds around the Atacama Desert are so salty you can float in them. The most popular place to visit is Laguna Cejar, but you can also decide to visit Laguna Baltinache, which is located down a long, dirt road off the main highway between San Pedro de Atacama and Calama.
  • El Tatio Geysers: The Geysers are located a few hours north from San Pedro de Atacama, at an altitude of 4,300 meters above sea level. The best time to visit the geysers is just after sunrise. There are many tours to El Tatio geysers from San Pedro de Atacama.
  • Stargazing: Some of the clearest skies in the world are in Atacama. The altitude coupled with the low density population means there’s almost no light pollution. You can go on a night excursion to watch the sky with a glass of hot wine.
  • Accommodation: Due to its popularity, accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama is very expensive, even by Chilean standards. But San Pedro de Atacama has a whole range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to mid-range guesthouses, right up to one of the absolute best luxury resorts you can imagine.
