SOME TOURISTIC INFORMATION THAT CAN BE OF INTEREST

Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, has become one of the most popular tourist destination in South America. A beautiful colonial town with a rich history and various archeological sites, it is the gateway to Machu Picchu. Copacabana is on the shore of Lake Titicaca, a sacred lake where it is believed the first Incas were born.

  • Machu Picchu: One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is one of the most visited destinations in South America. Tickets should be booked in advance as the entrance is limited to 2.500 visitors per day. You can take the train from Cusco but the four-day trek along the famous Inca Trail is another popular option.
  • Sacsayhuaman: This large fortress overlooking Cusco remains somewhat a mystery, it contains various temples and underground passages. Unfortunately only about 20% of the structure remains, but it is still worth a visit and easily accessible by foot, bus or taxi from the center of Cusco.
  • Tambomachay: This ceremonial Inca site is only a short drive or hike from Cusco and is included in your boleto turístico. The boleto turístico is a ticket which will allow you to visit all the ruins in and around Cusco.
  • Rainbow Mountain: Located about 3 hours away from Cusco in bus, Vinicunca – a colorful mountain 5,200 meters above sea level offers spectacular views. This trek is for acclimatized travelers and shouldn’t be attempted when it rains or snows.
  • Restaurants: Go to San Pedro market for empanadas and tamales and other Peruvian delicacies. The more adventurous traveler can try cuy (guinea pig), a regional specialty. Cusco is a popular tourist destination and there are many cafes and restaurants offering a diverse selection of local and international food.
  • Accommodation: There are plenty of options in Cusco to choose from depending on your budget. The neighborhood of San Blas is a favorite for travelers who want to stay in a quiet and beautiful area. It is recommended to spend a couple of nights in Cusco to acclimatize to the altitude, especially if planning to do a trek.
